The “career chat”

with two 5-year olds!

There are days when I wonder what I am doing with my life. Then there is that moment of clarity, when the kids make life simple!

At school, kids were being introduced to community workers and their jobs — like fireman, police, nurse and others. Inspired by this, I decide to have a “career” chat with my 5-year olds. “Prepare them early” was an advice I got.

Mom: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Daughter: I want to be a teacher.

Mom (impressed): wow that’s nice. What about your ER?

Son: I want to be a school bus driver! Take small children to school.

Me (baffled): That’s an interesting option, so you would drive the bus and drop kids to school? That is in the morning. What will you do after that?

Son: After school, I will pick them up and take them to their house.

Mom: What about when kids are in school?

Daughter (the supportive sister): He will clean the bus!

Son: and if kids drop things in the bus I will keep them safe and give it back!

Me (bewildered and amused): Lets talk more next year.
